Diamond

This is from a store in St Armands Circle, Florida.

While it may be "hard to be a diamond", it should be easy to put the apostrophe in "It's".

Whether the name of the town should have an apostrophe or not is up for discussion. The official position in the US is that place names don't have apostrophes, except in a very limited number of cases. I'd still prefer if it had one.

Visitors.jpg

Rivers Edge

This pub recently changed its name from "The Rising Sun" (needing no punctuation) to "The Rivers Edge", missing out the important apostrophe.

But they're inconsistent with that name. The pub signs all seem to miss out the apostrophe, but venture onto their website and it's pot luck whether there's an apostrophe or not.

It really looks wrong without the apostrophe, but consistency is as important as correctness!

Visitors.jpg

Toilets 4

Here's a couple of pairs of toilet/restroom/bathroom signs for you.

The top pair are from the Beamish Museum in Beamish, England. They've taken the easy option of omitting the apostrophes completely, rather than worrying about where to put them.

The bottom pair are from a large school in Leicester, England. They really need to understand the difference between a singular possessive and a plural possessive. It's a little worrying if this is what they're teaching the pupils.

Visitors.jpg

Honey Bee's

This delightful shop is in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.

The apostrophe in "Honey Bee's" certainly feels wrong, but they are totally consistent with it across their web site, Facebook, Tripadvisor and every other reference to the name.

If they were specifically referring to the plural of "honey bee", then clearly it would be wrong. But as a business name, and matching with the correctly punctuated "Hannah's" underneath, I'm prepared to let them have it.

Visitors.jpg

Tuesdays and Wednesdays

What is it about days of the week that makes people put apostrophes in their plurals?

Here's a double fault for you!

Visitors.jpg

Fathers's Day

Not sure whether it's Father's Day or Fathers' Day? Take the easy option, as shown here, and put the apostrophe before the "s" and after it.

It's so much easier when you can claim to be right and wrong at the same time.

Visitors.jpg

Heavy Hauling

This was taken at "Hot August Nights", which is a very large classic car show in Reno, Nevada.  All his efforts at restoration (time and money) are negated by his egregious misuse of an apostrophe.

What a shame ...

Visitors.jpg

Mr Cool

Oxford Street in Central London.

Nothing cool about Mr. Cool.

Perhaps it was a very hot day when his signwriter took the job ...

Visitors.jpg

Autos's

What is it about vans and apostrophes?

His signwriter knew there was something to be careful about with apostrophes and plurals, but his wild guess was unfortunately wrong.

Visitors.jpg

Office Depot

Here's an example from Office Depot in the US. They are one of the largest purveyors of office supplies and equipment in the United States, but clearly over-stocked on apostrophes and are trying to use them up.

Big companies like Office Depot simply shouldn't allow mistakes like this to get through.

Visitors.jpg

Groundworks

What is it about vans and the abuse of apostrophes? Every other reference to this company's name, whether on the internet or Facebook, is correct. So why did they let their signwriter get it wrong?

I despair ...

Visitors.jpg

Cutlery

This particularly bad example of apostrophes in plurals is from a Starbucks in Northern Ireland. The only saving grace, if I try really hard to think of one, is that they've been consistent across all three cases.

I also hate wooden cutlery, but that's a different subject altogether ...

Visitors.jpg

Bespo'ke

This shop front sign is from Clifton, Bristol.

It's certainly an unusual use of an apostrophe. I can't think of any valid reason why they'd want to put the apostrophe in that position, other than them being entirely pretentious. But hey, any publicity is good publicity, and now you've heard of them!

Visitors.jpg

Millennium

This is a beacon that can be lit to commemorate notable events. However, on the last 4 occasions that it's been lit, an apostrophe was missed. It's either intentional (and wrong), or careless (and wrong).

Visitors.jpg

Potatoes

These were adjacent notices in Charlbury Garden Centre in January. Do the apostrophes grow with the potatoes? And, quite apart from the apostrophe misuse, why are the grow-your-own potato's (sic) on the left more expensive than the seed potatoes on the right? It must be the added apostrophe.

And, of course, why didn't someone spot the two different spellings and get the wrong one corrected?

Visitors.jpg

Eccles Phones

Eccles is a market town in the City of Salford in Greater Manchester. Why the "Eccle's Phones" shop thought it necessary to introduce an apostrophe before the "s" is a mystery. It's one of the more unusual apostrophe misuses that I've seen. It's also wrong and offensive to the eye!

Of course, if the shop actually belongs to Mr Eccle then I'll withdraw my comments!

Visitors.jpg

Wont

This from the ANZ Bank, Lismore, Australia.

It always surprises me that organisations get these signs printed, and the error isn't spotted by anyone involved. "Wont" is a dictionary word, but it's not what's wanted here!

Visitors.jpg

Pupils

Just the one pupil? It's shocking, and quite worrying, that a primary school can allow a banner to be displayed with such a bad error! It's particularly bad as it then goes on to praise its results for reading and writing!

Must do better!

Visitors.jpg

Winter Lotus

Here's a promotional poster from the Winter Lotus bistro in Burnley, Lancashire.

I've counted 9 incorrect apostrophes on that one poster! Why did drinks or deals miss out? Capital letters seem a bit random as well, but that's very minor compared to all those apostrophes!

Visitors.jpg

Butter

There are arguments in favour of Goat Butter, Goats Butter, Goat's Butter, and Goats' Butter. I know which is my preferred choice. But whichever one you pick, the key is to be consistent, unlike the Goats and Goat's variation on this pack of butter!

Visitors.jpg

Businesses

Seen live in the centre of Dorking, England. Given the apostrophe and the lower case "s", I sense that the signwriter knew there was something that needed to be done to make a plural, but unfortunately got it wrong.

Visitors.jpg

Various apostrophes

Here's a couple of apostrophes for you ... and a choice of places to put them. It's a pity they're not in the right places! See if you can move them around so they're correct!

Visitors.jpg

Teachers

It says it all, really!

Teachers are most definitely needed, starting with English teachers.

Visitors.jpg

Father's Day

While there's scope for discussion about whether Father's Day should have the apostrophe before or after the "s", all the other apostrophes (9 of them!) are definitely incorrect.

I'd need to drink that beer just to recover!

Visitors.jpg

Willow Cottages

These cottages are in Hampstead, London. They were built in the mid-late 19th century. I don't know if the additional apostrophe is original, or if it's been replaced in more recent years. Either way, it's wrong, and if I owned the cottages it would be top of my list for remediation!

Visitors.jpg

Tomatoes

Two signs, next to each other. One correct, the other incorrect. Clearly, the extra apostrophes need a basket to fit them in. Why do people do this?

Visitors.jpg

Scarfs

Someone has tried to remove the apostrophe from "bottle's" but didn't get round to the even more obvious incorrect apostrophe in "Scarf's".

Note that "scarfs" is a valid plural of scarf, as well as the alternative "scarves".

Visitors.jpg

Ladie's Cloaks

I'm almost speechless about this misuse of an apostrophe!

Visitors.jpg

Christmas Fayre

Here's a full set of unwanted apostrophes seen at Shrewsbury Steam Rally. Enjoy!

Visitors.jpg

The Van

This one has been around for a few years, but worth sharing here next to the other van.

You could argue that at least it's consistent, but it's so bad as to be inexcusable!

Visitors.jpg

Showroom's

They were doing so well with the signage on this van, and then they messed it up on the final one.

Just why?

Visitors.jpg

Foleys

In Killarney, Ireland. It looks like the signwriter couldn't decide whether the name needed an apostrophe or not. Problem solved - include it in one sign and leave it out in the other!

Visitors.jpg

Teddington Locks

Just to show that apostrophes in plurals isn't solely a modern failing! Here's one from 1858.

Visitors.jpg

St Bene't's

Here's an interesting one for you!

This is from a church in Cambridge, England. The church is named after St Benedict, with the name officially abbreviated to Bene't. So while it may look unusual, it's doubly correct, with the first apostrophe indicating a contraction and the second one showing a possessive.

Visitors.jpg

Heaven's Kitchen

"Heaven's Kitchen" is a small chain of reasonably good steak restaurants near to where I live. They've been sending me regular emails advertising themselves recently, but unfortunately they all have basic apostrophe errors in them. They're also inconsistent in their own name, so they switch between an apostrophe in "Heaven's" or not. Here's a collection of errors from their emails.

I have tried several times to contact them to suggest they fix the errors, but I've had no response yet.

Visitors.jpg

Goodwyns

The Goodwyns furniture shop photo has been around for several years, and has been commented on elsewhere many times. But I'd never got round to including it here ... until now.

Goodwyns (with or without an apostrophe) was a furniture shop in the Midlands area of the UK. It's now closed and in a sorry state of disrepair. But it's gone down in history because of all those apostrophes.

Visitors.jpg

Dickens

Inserting an apostrophe into a name like this must be one of the worst examples of apostrophe abuse I've seen in a long time! I'm sure the real Charles Dickens would be horrified!

Just totally wrong <sigh>

Visitors.jpg

Purity

Great beer, but poor use of apostrophes!

If in doubt, leave it out!

Visitors.jpg

Memberships

This one was taken at Hertfordshire Zoo.

Why does "Memberships" get an apostrophe, but "Tickets" doesn't? They're both plural nouns, and they both end in a consonant - not that ending in a vowel would make any difference, but I'm looking for reasons, no matter how wrong!

One of life's mysteries ...

Visitors.jpg

Cafe apostrophes

It's the house of fresh apostrophes! One free apostrophe with every item ordered!

Visitors.jpg

Bernays Grove

Here's an interesting variation on the apostrophes-in-street-names topic.

This street in Lambeth (London) is named after Professor Albert James Bernays (1823–1892) who lived nearby until his death. Later, the house (with others) was demolished to build the Lambeth Town Hall (opened 1908).
Early street directories have the name without an apostrophe, but at some point someone decided it needed one, and promptly put it in the wrong place. This amounts to a misspelling of Bernays' name which they were supposed to be honouring.

Visitors.jpg

Bookings

At least someone realised that the plural of "Enquiry" needed an "...ies" ending. Unfortuntely, they messed it up with the apostrophe. And, of course, "Booking" gained an apostrophe as well.

It's a double error of being wrong and inconsistent!

Visitors.jpg

Chocolate

Inconsistent apostrophes here could lead to a misunderstanding of the nature of this event!

Having looked up the details of the event, it looks as though this picture (even with its missing apostrophe) is actually the most professional aspect of the entire experience!

Visitors.jpg

TK Max

It's a messy list of words in a largely meaningless order, and the "womens" and "mens" make me cringe. Is it "women's accessories"? If so, is it then "men's kids"? Who knows.

Visitors.jpg

Seas & Oceans

It's the inconsistency that is inexplicable. Why does "SEA'S get an apostrophe when "OCEANS" doesn't?

Visitors.jpg

Forest Court

Two for one here! An apostrophe that shouldn't be there (the one in the plural visitors), and a misplaced one in the "owner's expense".

I don't think they'd take it as a valid excuse for unauthorised parking though!

Visitors.jpg

Matalan

This store front sign is from "Matalan", a widespread chain in the UK, so presumably this shocker appears many times. It may look neater without any pesky apostrophes, but it's wrong, wrong, wrong (that's 3 times).

Visitors.jpg

Crackers

One of the key uses for the apostrophe is to indicate omission of letters. If you're going to omit both the first and last letters of "AND" then you need an apostrophe at the beginning and end, not just the beginning.
Note that the rock band Guns N' Roses are very explicit about their use of a single apostrophe, and I'm not arguing with them!

Visitors.jpg

Bars open

This mass produced offering is from Ryanair, a low cost airline that presumably can't afford to pay anyone to check their printed material for them.

However, I do love the idea of having a safety notice that also advises that the bar is open.

Visitors.jpg

SOS

How does anyone actually allow this sign writing to make it onto the side of a van? Their website is quite smart, and consistently has "Schools Offices Services" throughout, without any apostrophes. I think I'll allow them that, as it's their style, providing they keep it consistently. But then they go and mess it up as their registered company name is actually "School's Offices Services Limited".

SOS has never been more appropriate!

Visitors.jpg

YAY

I would be very unhappy to receive this birthday greeting!
It's still available on the retail website (Next UK) - I'm writing to them to ask them to get it changed.

Visitors.jpg

Santa

Here's a nice festive one for you! I'm not blaming Santa, but the plural of "elf" is "elves", and most definitely not "elf's" with an apostrophe.
Ho, ho, ho!

Visitors.jpg

Wednesday

When I first saw this one, I couldn't see a problem, though it looked a little odd. "Wednesday's Domain" is indeed the name of the wine producer, so the first apostrophe is correct, and the second one is the correct possessive for the particular wine. But they messed up on the final "it's" on the last line.
I'm not wildly happy with the idea of de-alcoholised wine either!

Visitors.jpg

Right foot

This is an unusual apostrophe error! Seen on the N2 road in Ireland.

Visitors.jpg

No Entry

This abused apostrophe is on a sign in the grounds of an extremely expensive private school in Sydney, Australia. It's hopefully not indicative of the standard of education they provide!

Visitors.jpg

Detective Agency

"Problem solving at it's best" - this one makes me laugh ... and possibly cry!

Genuine photo - seen in Kingston upon Thames.

Visitors.jpg

Pair's of Socks

The extra apostrophe may make these socks a little uncomfortable to wear!

Visitors.jpg

Commas

This one has got so much wrong with it that I don't know where to start. The incorrect apostrophes have turned into incorrect commas. Oh dear!

Visitors.jpg

Flats

Yet another example of an apostrophe that should never have seen the light of day.

Visitors.jpg

Ice creams

5 unwanted apostrophes ... but at least they've been consistent!

Visitors.jpg

Chips & Fishes

Somehow I could almost live with the apostrophe in "Chip's", but the one in "Fishe's" just makes me feel a bit unwell.

Visitors.jpg

Working Mens

I guess this little apostrophe mishap really is set in stone!

Visitors.jpg

Road names

Here's a really good example of why road names need to keep their apostrophes.

Visitors.jpg

Burger King

The plural of Burger King is Burger Kings! No apostrophe please!

Visitors.jpg

Coastal Spring

Making our what a safer place? No apostrophe please.

Visitors.jpg

Fish and Chips

I'd get indigestion from these!
Why didn't "Chips" get an apostrophe?

Visitors.jpg

Express Travel

Extra apostrophes by arrangement.

Visitors.jpg

New Buildings

Here's an example of an unnecessary apostrophe that I don't think I've ever seen before...

Visitors.jpg

Muffins

Surely not!

Visitors.jpg

Propellers

Keep clear of loose apostrophes.

Visitors.jpg

Childrens

Can we have an apostrophe in that please?

Visitors.jpg

Mens socks

Another missing apostrophe!

Visitors.jpg

Were open

Are they open or not?

Visitors.jpg

M&S Soda Water

Perfect on it's own or as a mixer.
This is not just an unwanted apostrophe, it's an M&S unwanted apostrophe.

Visitors.jpg

Booksmart

Plurals of single capital letters don't need an apostrophe.

Visitors.jpg

Apostrophe Cafe

I just love this one. It may be a few years old, but it sums it all up.
Unfortunately, this café chain went out of business.

Visitors.jpg

Tubs

Those extra apostrophes will ruin your teeth.

Visitors.jpg

Road apostrophes

Danger - extra apostrophes in the road!

Visitors.jpg

Charmouth

It's all good until that final it's.

Visitors.jpg

Harvester

What were they thinking with that "Kids'"?

Visitors.jpg

Closure

This one gets the prize for the most unnecessary apostrophes in one single sign.

Visitors.jpg

Cannabis

I wanted to include this one as an example of an apostrophe that isn't. It's actually an electrical box that was in just the right position!

Visitors.jpg

Mum

She won't be happy with that missing apostrophe either.

Visitors.jpg

BBQ Bin

BBQ isn't a good abbreviation anyway, but when it gets an apostrophe to make it plural, it becomes much worse!

Visitors.jpg

Minion

Hey, there needs to be an apostrophe in that! And now there is. Just not in the right place.

Visitors.jpg

Flower

Such a pretty flower, such a shame about the missing apostrophe.

Visitors.jpg

P&O

Hopefully, in the future those cruises will come without a surplus apostrophe.

Visitors.jpg

Cottage

Why, oh why?

Visitors.jpg

Beauty

And it's not correctly punctuated.

Visitors.jpg

Zest

To be followed by an apostrophe clearance, I hope.

Visitors.jpg

Alterations

I hope they do alterations ...

Visitors.jpg

Venues

There are a few things wrong with this, but the apostrophe in <venue's> is the worst.
It's simple - don't put an apostrophe in a plural!

Visitors.jpg

Head bang

I can definitely relate to the sentiment here. But only after adding a missing apostrophe to "Ill"!

Visitors.jpg

Doggie

The inconsistency bugs me with this one. The first "DOGS" gets given an apostrophe, but the other two instances are correct. Why don't people simply check what they've written or had printed? Something is obviously wrong!

Visitors.jpg

Cocktails

This sign is simply horrible! Quite apart from the error in including an apostrophe, it doesn't even look like an apostrophe, and that "s" on the end has clearly seen better days.
